K-12 Educator's Workshop: Ofrendas

Are you interested in having your class(es) make an ofrenda, but not sure where to start?

Día de los Muertos is celebrated each year on November 1st and marks a time for people to honor those who have died by creating “ofrendas” with food, photographs, flowers, art objects, and items that hold significance to both the deceased loved one and those still living. The National Hispanic Cultural Center holds several events related to Día de Muertos including an exhibit of ofrendas on display for two weeks at the end of October, beginning of November. We invite teachers who attend this workshop or have participated in previous years, to create ofrendas with their classroom students and then install the ofrendas here at the Center, October 16 – November 6, 2015

K-12 Educator's Workshop: Posada & Printmaking

In partnership with UNM: Latin American & Iberian Institute

Join us for an evening discussing Día de los Muertos in the K-12 classroom. We’ll focus on the significance of death in Mexican culture, José Guadalupe Posada and the role of satire in social critiques, and printmaking as a form of resistance. The evening will be co-led by educator Mike Graham de la Rosa and artist Carol Sanchez. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own design for printing on repurposed materials, and will receive certificates of professional development alongside copies of relevant curriculum materials. Refreshments will be served. For more information, visit laii.unm.edu/events.
